Grade 3 YouTube Reading Assignment
On YouTube, I posted a video that walks through a reading passage that third graders should be able to understand and answer questions about.
Click the link below to read the (PDF) passage featured in the video:
Directions: Read the selection and choose the best answer to each question.
What does Yurik’s dialogue in paragraph 3 suggest about the relationship between Yurik and Luda?
Support your answer with evidence from the story.
Acceptable Written Responses
On a standardized writing test, your answer is worth 2 points. The examples below show acceptable responses that got the full 2 points, and those that got 1 point.
SCORE POINT 2
A complete response will provide one of the following explanations about what Yurik's dialogue in paragraph 3 suggests about the relationship between Yurik and Luda:
o Yurik takes advantage of Luda because she is new to the area.
o Yurik plans to trick Luda into helping him do work without much reward.
A complete response may include, but is not limited to, the following evidence cited or paraphrased from the text:
o “‘Ahh, then we must plant turnips this season.’” (paragraph 3)
o “‘I will keep the root portions, and you can keep the parts that grow above the ground.’” (paragraph 3)
• Evidence is accurately used to support the response.
• The response and the evidence to support it are based on the text.
Student Response Example #1:
He is trying to trick Luda. He is trying to take the good part of the food, and
she takes the bad part. I know this because the passege says "I will keep the
root portions, and you can keep the parts that grow above the ground."
Explanation #1:
This response receives full credit for an acceptable answer and relevant text-based evidence. The writer provides a valid answer (“He is trying to trick Luda”). Relevant text-based evidence is provided (“’I will keep the root portions, and you can keep the parts that grow above the ground’”).
Student Response Example #2:
the diologe in paragragf 3 sugest they arnt good friends. Because, he chries
to chrick her so he could get the good part of the vegetables.
Explanation #2:
This response receives full credit for an acceptable answer and relevant text based evidence.
The writer provides a valid answer, (“they arnt good friends”). Relevant paraphrased text evidence is provided, (“he chries to chrick her so he could get the good part of the vegetables”).
SCORE POINT 1
A partial response may include one of the answers expected in the complete response. (See above.) However, the evidence included does not support the answer stated, or no evidence is provided.
A partial response may cite or paraphrase relevant text evidence, but the student does not include an accurate answer about what Yurik's dialogue in paragraph 3 suggests about the relationship between Yurik and Luda.
Student Response Example #1:
The text says, "I will keep the root portions, and you can keep the parts that grow above the ground.
Explanation #1:
This response receives partial credit for providing relevant text evidence but does not offer an accurate answer.
The writer does not provide a valid answer to explain what Yurik’s dialogue in paragraph 3 suggests about the relationship between Yurik and Luda.
However, they provide relevant text evidence from paragraph 3 ("’I will keep the root portions , and you can keep the parts that grow above the ground").
This evidence shows the relationship between Yurik and Luda at that point in the article.
Student Response Example #2:
Yurik's dialogue in paragragh 3 suggestes about the relationships Yurik and
luda because Yurik knew that luda doesn't know about any of the plants that
grow in the area so he knew he could trick her. I know this because says that
in paragraghs and 3.
Explanation #2:
This response receives partial credit for an acceptable answer but invalid text evidence.
The writer provides an acceptable answer to explain what Yurik’s dialogue in paragraph 3 suggests about the relationship between Yurik and Luda (“Yurik knew that luda doesn’t know about any of the plants that grow in the area so he knew he could trick her”).
However, the writer does not provide relevant text evidence from paragraph 3 stating, (“I know this because says that in paragraghs 2 and 3”) without writing the desired portion of the paragraph is not a valid approach to receive credit for relevant text evidence.
